An exchange of gunfire between Bolivian robbers and police has left at least 5 people dead on Thursday (13) in front of a jewelry store in the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, the local government said.
The dead are a policeman, a hostage who tried to escape and three robbers, two of them of Brazilian nationality, according to the secretary of the government of Bolivia, Carlos Romero. A fourth robber and a woman were arrested.
Romero has indicated that the government works on the hypothesis that thieves are fugitives from another assault on a jewelry store and members of the PCC criminal faction. “Preliminarily we can work with the hypothesis that they are people who are related to the known assault on the Empire jewelery, they are fugitives of this assault, and consequently they are linked to the First Capital Command (PCC) of Brazil,” he told a news conference.
According to Romero, the police took five minutes to reach the Eurochronos jewelry store, where a group of four armed robbers were being held hostage. After the policemen asked them to surrender, the robbers opened fire and killed a lieutenant. In the exchange of shots, three other police officers were injured. One of them is in critical condition. According to the newspaper “El Deber”, in total there are 8 wounded, between police and jewelry founders.
A woman who was taken hostage tried to escape and was killed by one of the attackers, according to Romero. After that, the assailants ran into the store and were shot by the police.
“Each of the thieves had eight shippers, 240 bullets were counted,” said the secretary of state.
Santa Cruz state prosecutor Jose Centenaro said he had appointed a commission of prosecutors to investigate the case.
